Youngstown City School District is proud to announce that beginning in the 2026-2027 school year, the consolidated East and Chaney high schools and middle schools will come together under a new name: Youngstown Unified. This transformation is part of a two-phase reconfiguration plan that merges the high schools at the current East High School site and unites the middle schools at the current East Middle School site. Rayen Early College High School and Middle School will continue operating, with plans to relocate both to the Chaney campus in the coming years.
Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor described the reconfiguration as āa visionary step forward,ā offering students expanded educational programs, modern facilities, and greater opportunities within an inclusive environment. The district engaged families, staff, scholars, and the broader community throughout the process to ensure the transition reflects shared values and goals.
As part of this transformation, YCSD invited the public to help select a new mascot and identity ā and the results are in. Beginning in fall 2026, Youngstown Unified will be known as the Defenders, symbolized by a powerful owl. Indigenous to Ohio, the owl represents the spirit of the Defenders ā watchful, resilient, and prepared to rise above adversity. With fierce eyes and sharp insight, the Defender Owl serves as a reminder that knowledge is power, and protecting it is a shared responsibility.
In collaboration with district teams, a bold visual identity has been developed to bring the Defenders to life. The logo features symbolic colorsāred, yellow, blue, white, and blackāreflecting strength, unity, and diversity. This design will be showcased in school branding, athletic uniforms, and district-wide communications, signaling a new era for students, staff, and the Youngstown community.
Reflecting on the power of this new identity, Superintendent Batchelor shared, āThe Defenders mascot goes beyond a name; it is a powerful symbol of strength, who we are, and who we are becoming. We are grateful for our scholars, staff, alumni, and community support, and look forward to what lies ahead for the future of Youngstown City School District.ā
Board of Education President Juanita Walker added, āThe introduction of the Defender mascot, represented by the owl, marks an exciting new chapter for YCSD. This thoughtful decision, shaped by student and community input, highlights the districtās commitment to unity, wisdom, and resilience. I look forward to seeing the Defender Owl inspire growth and pride throughout the Youngstown City School District.ā
