The Wall That Heals

The East High School JROTC Golden Bear Battalion recently participated in a powerful and meaningful service learning event in partnership with the Warren Heritage Center, fulfilling part of their Cadets’ Service Learning requirements. The battalion assisted with the construction of the Vietnam Veterans Mobile Memorial and Education Center, a traveling tribute designed to honor and educate the public about those who served and sacrificed during the Vietnam War.

The Cadets played an essential role in helping to erect the memorial and its accompanying educational van. As part of the installation, they carried name plates and wall panels, a task performed with deep respect and solemnity. Each name plate was held facing upward toward the sky, a ceremonial act symbolizing reverence and honoring the fallen by directing their names toward the Heavens.

This hands-on experience allowed the students to gain a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by Vietnam veterans—many of whom returned home facing long-term effects from Agent Orange exposure, PTSD, and service-related illnesses. The event highlighted the efforts of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) and its In Memory program, which seeks to remember not only those who died during the war, but also those who later passed due to service-related causes.

Covered by the Tribune Chronicle, the event served as a moving tribute and an educational opportunity for the Golden Bear Battalion. Their participation reflects East High's continued commitment to service, honor, and community engagement.
